If
you gaze closely into the clouds of this painting, you will see
Niwot’s Spirit hovering over the Flatirons of Boulder, Colorado.
Chief
Niwot, (meaning Left Hand) was the legendary leader of the Southern
Arapaho Indians who lived in the Boulder Valley when White Man first
arrived in the late 1850’s.
He was a highly respected diplomat and linguist who gave his
life for peace.
Niwot strove desperately to work together with the White Man
so that his people might co-exist and live together side by side.
His grave efforts for peace failed and Chief Niwot was mortally
wounded at The Sand Creek Massacre in 1864.
